Sonia, Manmohan meet Modi to end GST deadlock
28 November 2015, Nirapad News: Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi and Senior Leader Manmohan Singh met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi over tea tonight at his residence for talks to break a deadlock over the introduction of a new goods and services tax (GST).
The meeting between the rivals was the first since Modi rose to power 18 months ago, and could herald a long-awaited compromise on the proposed GST, billed as the biggest tax reform since independence.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu were also present.
Earlier in the day, Naidu said that Modi has invited the two Congress leaders for tea to discuss the issues related to important bills and working together for smooth functioning of Parliament.
The meeting is significant as the government and the Congress are at loggerheads on the passage of crucial legislations like the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill. Congress had stalled passage of the GST Bill in the last session objecting to some provisions of the bill.
