Stolen money recovery is new governor’s priority
20 March 2016, Nirapad News: Newly appointed Bangladesh Bank (BB) Governor Fazle Kabir today said recovery of $81 million heist by hackers from the BB’s account with New York Federal Reserve Bank would be his topmost priority.
“I will give priority to recover the heist money, which had gone from BB’s reserve and ensure this would never recur,” he told the journalists after taking charge as the 11th governor of the country’s central bank.
Earlier, Kabir relinquished his charge as chairman of Sonali Bank before joining the central bank.
Kabir was made new BB governor after Dr Atiur Rahman had resigned from the top position of the country’s central bank amid widespread criticism over $100 million heist by hackers from the BB’s account with New York Federal Reserve Bank.
He said BB would take necessary steps to strengthen the information and communication technology department’s security system to check the repetition of this kind of incident again.
He said the government has already formed a committee led by former BB governor Dr Mohammed Farashuddin to investigate the incident.
“We will take our next steps on the proposals and recommendations of the investigation committee,” he added.
Kabir said he would also take all efforts to restore the confidence of BB officials to ensure high efficiency.
“Generally, we show lack of confidence after any incident … we will have to recover the lack of confidence,” he added.
Responding to a question, he said if necessary, reforms could be made in any department of the bank as it is a continuous process.
