Storm causes huge loss in Rajshahi region: 4 dead

Rajshahi, 05 April 2015, Nirapad News: Four persons were killed during the norwester at different areas of the district yesterday afternoon. The first norwester coupled with rain in the current season caused huge damage to the standing crops and fruits especially mango and litchi.

The storm also disrupted power distribution in Rajshahi city and suburban areas. Local met office sources said the velocity of the wind was 65 to 70 kilometre per hour that disrupted power supply for around 10 hours.

The gusty wind along with rainfall started at around 5.50 pm and continued for over 30 minutes. Four persons including an elderly woman and a young housewife died during the norwester in different areas of the district.

The deceased were identified as Jahanara Begum, 60, and Emajuddin, 45, in Bagha Upazila, Abdul Hakim, 32, in Paba Upazila and Shahnaz Begum, 18, in Manda Upazila.

On hearing the death news, Paba Upazila Nirbahi Officer Kaisarul Islam instantly visited the house of deceased in Bargachhi village and provided Taka 20,000 to the bereaved family. He also told the local journalists that the affected peoples will also be given financial support through the respective public representatives.

A number of thatched houses and small shops were affected, standing crops were damaged and many seasonal fruit trees like mango, litchi and jackfruit were uprooted in different areas in the city and suburbs. However, the extent of damage couldn’t be known immediately.

Rajshahi met office source said they recorded 14 millimeters of rainfall till 7.45pm. Rajshahi Medical College Hospital source said some 20 people lashed by norwester were admitted in the hospital.

Power supply in the city was restored at around 3.30 am after massive struggle by all the PDB units.

Shawkat Hassan, Assistant Director of Fire Service and Civil Defense, said two teams were engaged to remove the fallen trees.
