Sylhet transport strike withdrawn
17 December 2015, Nirapad News: The indefinite transport strike, imposed in Sylhet division on Tuesday morning (December 15), has been withdrawn in the evening considering the sufferings of commuters.
The decision of withdrawal was made at a meeting held at divisional commissioner office in Alampur area of Sylhet district around 5:30pm.
Sylhet deputy commissioner (DC), divisional administration officials and district truck union and transport labor organization leaders attended the meeting.
DC Joynal Abedin told banglanews that they have made a decision considering the demands both from the transport leaders and local administration.
Later, the transport labor leaders agreed to withdraw the strike, the DC added.
Earlier in the day, Divisional Road Transport Labor Union called the strike for indefinite period to meet their 5-point demand including of stopping alleged extra toll charge and torturing the transport workers.
However, inter-district transportation was disrupted badly and vehicles including bus and truck were not seen plying. But in some local areas, light vehicles were seen carrying commuters and goods.
For this strike, people fell in grave torment and sufferings. Passengers were waiting for transports for a long time. Some had taken CNG-run auto-rickshaw to reach their destinations.
