Tk 2,536.19 crore student stipend provided by government: Matia Chowdhury

3 March 2015, Nirapad News: The government under its social safety net programme in the last five fiscal years distributed Taka 25,361,934,000 to 14,258,216 students as stipend for ensuring 100 percent enrollment of students in schools across the country.
Agriculture Minister Begum Matia Chowdhury, also in-charge of the Prime Minister’s Office in Parliament, told this in the House today while replying to a question from treasury bench member M Abul Kalam.
She said the government has provided the stipend to students from class-VI to degree and equivalent levels under the safety net programme for increasing literacy rate in the country.
Matia Chowdhury informed the House that the government brought 7,870,129 students in 63,674 schools including 87 primary schools in 486 upazilas across the country under primary education stipend project. The Stipend Project for Primary education (2nd phase) and Children Welfare Trust are running the programme, she told the House.
The minister also said the government created 45,000 new posts for primary teachers and recruited 82,725 teachers and employees for primary schools. The government also set up multimedia classrooms in 21,000 educational institutions across the country, Matia said..
