Tobacco sales centres fined for violating TCA in Rangpur
10 November 2015, Nirapad News: A mobile court fined six tobacco product sales centres Taka 1,600 for violating the amended Tobacco Control Act (TCA) here on Monday afternoon, a press release said today.
Led by Executive Magistrate Mintu Biswas, the mobile court conducted separate drives and fined the smoking and non-smoking tobacco product sales centres in Dhap, Parjatan Motel and Central Bus Terminal areas in the city.
Health Inspector of the Civil Surgeon’s Office Mahbubur Rahman, Police, Programme Officer of Association for Community Development (ACD) Asim Sarker, were present, among others, during the drives.
The mobile court found violation of the amended TCA by the tobacco products sales centres through exhibiting advertisements of tobacco products and decorating their shops with attractive blank packets and covers of different tobacco companies.
Later, the mobile court fined the tobacco sales centres Taka 1,600 for violating the Tobacco Advertising, Promotion and Sponsorship (TAPS) ban under section 5 (Chha) of the amended TCA.
Besides, the mobile court burnt huge seized blank packets and covers of tobacco products and black-marked front sides of colourful boxes supplied by tobacco companies to the sales centres for advertisement and promotion of tobacco products.
The conscious citizens highly lauded the special drives conducted by the mobile court and fining of the tobacco products sales centres for violating the amended TCA and demanded conducting similar raids frequently.
General Secretary of district unit of Sushashoner Janno Nagorik Akbar Hossain suggested strict enforcement of the amended TCA and Smoking & Tobacco Products Usage (Control) Act to save public health from tobacco catastrophes.
