Tofail Ahmed to increase tea production by discouraging import
5 March 2015, Nirapad News: Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed on Thursday said that, tea production has to be increased by discouraging its import.
“Land of the country’s different parts is suitable for tea production and the potentiality should be utilized,” he said while inaugurating a workshop at the conference room of Export Promotion Bureau organized by Commerce Ministry and Bangladesh Tea Board (BTB).
Now, the country’s domestic demand for tea stands at 64 million kg while a total of 66.26 million kg of tea was produced in 2013. Tea production is increasing at 2 per cent rate against the domestic demand rate of 3.23 per cent.
The commerce minister said tea production has been started in Panchagar, Thakurgaon and Lalmonirhat districts and the government is providing necessary assistance to the tea planters. “If we can maximize the potentiality, we could be able to export tea after meeting the domestic demand,” he said.
BTB Chairman Major Gen M Enayetullah, additional secretaries of commerce ministry A T M Murtaza Reza Chowdhury and M Shawkat Ali Waresi also spoke on the occasion with Senior Secretary Hedayetullah Al Mamun in the chair.
