Train fares will be raised: Railways Minister
14 January 2016, Nirapad News: Railways Minister Mazibul Hoque has said train fares will be raised from February, pending the prime minister’s go-ahead.
The minister made the disclosure in a press briefing at Railway Bhaban in the capital on Thursday afternoon.
He said: “A proposal regarding the fare hike has been sent to the prime minister. The train fare will be hiked after receiving the premier’s approval.”
In response to a query, Mazibul said train fares would increase by 7.8%.
“The hike will be a minimum of Tk5 and a maximum of Tk45.We are increasing fares to improve the standard of passenger service. From now on, train fares will be hiked every year,” he added.
Bangladesh Railway makes losses of Tk900 crore every year. “It will be possible to minimise the loss at least Tk100 crore by raising fares.”
The last time train fares were revised was in June 2012 – that, too, after 20 years.
