UN appreciates BB’s policy initiatives for sustainable development

07 November 2015, Nirapad News: A top UN official has appreciated Bangladesh Bank (BB)’s innovative policy initiatives, saying that other central bankers have a lot to learn from BB’s inclusive financing measures.

Neil Pierre, Chief of the Support and Coordination of UN Office of Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), made this observation while addressing a seminar on “Inclusive and Innovative Financing Practices in Bangladesh”, held at the UN Headquarters in New York on Thursday.

Neil also chaired the seminar while senior officials of different departments of United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) attended the event, said a BB press release issued here today (Friday).

He also praised the BB’s innovative policy initiatives, which fit into the broader paradigm of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

BB Governor Dr. Atiur Rahman in his interventions explained the impact of financial inclusion on sustainable growth in Bangladesh.

Earlier on the day, the governor met the Research Team of Human Development Report Office (HDRO) of UNDP. The consultation was moderated by Dr. Selim Jahan, Director of HDRO.

Dr. Jahan also appreciated BB’s creative and innovative inclusive policy efforts and focused on development outcomes of these developmental central banking policies including women empowerment, egalitarian social development and employment creations.

Dr. Rahman underscored the innovative developmental role of the BB to mainstream the value based sustainable financing through ingraining socially responsible financing ethos.

He said the BB’s socially responsible inclusive, green financing initiatives are upholding macroeconomic stability through generating broad based domestic demand.

The central bank chief also highlighted the exemplary role of Bangladesh Government for human capital development as well as its strategies and actions to achieve SDGs through inclusive growth.

In a separate programme at the UN Secretariat organized by the UNDESA, the governor highlighted the BB’s role imparting its deliberate directional bias to channel financial flows towards inclusive, environmentally sustainable domestic demand driven output initiatives.

Dr. Rahman thanked UNDP and UNDESA for their continued support to the human development of Bangladesh
