Vote counting continues for Zila Parishad election

28 December 2016, Nirapad News: The counting of voting continues after the election at the first-ever Zila Parishad (district council) in 61 districts was held today amid a fair and peaceful atmosphere.

The voting began at 9am and continued till 2pm in 61 out of 64 administrative districts as the elections excluded the three hill districts.

“The counting of voting is going on after the election was held peacefully,” Secretary of Election Commission (EC) Secretariat Mohammad Abdullah told BSS.

He said all necessary arrangements were taken to ensure a free, fair and credible Zila Parishad polls.

Nearly 6,700 elected representatives of local government bodies including upazila parishads, union parishads, municipalities and city corporations are the electorates of the zila parishad elections.

The electorate is entitled to exercise their franchise to elect a chairman and 20 members, including five for the reserved women seats, to form a Zila Parishad in a district.

The first district council election is being held as the five-year tenure of the government-appointed 61 district administrators expires this month.

At least 22 chairmen candidates in the elections to zila parishads in 61 districts, slated for December 28, are set to be elected unopposed.

According to Election Commission officials, 10 aspirants withdrew their nomination papers on the last day of the withdrawal of nomination papers, while single candidates had submitted nomination papers in 12 districts.

The 22 districts are Thakurgaon, Dinajpur, Jaipurhat, Naogaon, Natore, Sirajganj, Kushtia, Jessore, Bagerhat, Jhalakati, Bhola, Netrakona, Kishoreganj, Gazipur, Tangail, Munshiganj, Dhaka, Narayanganj, Faridpur, Habiganj, Feni and Chittagong.

In the indirect elections, elected representative of all the local government bodies under a particular district would cast their vote to elect a chairman, 15 members and five women members for each district.
