World Habitat Day celebrated in Gaibandha

6 October 2015, Nirapad News: World Habitat Day-2015 was celebrated in the district and elsewhere in the country and the globe on Monday amid much enthusiasm and with the theme ‘Public Places for All’.
Marking the day, Public Works Department (PWD) in association with district administration chalked out a programme.
A discussion meeting on the significance of the day was held in the hall room of Station Club (officers’ club) of the town here in evening.
Superintendent of police (SP) Ashraful Islam addressed the meeting as the chief guest and Civil Surgeon Dr. Nirmalendu Chowdhury, and Additional District Magistrate M. Shafiqul Islam were present as the special guests.
With executive engineer of PWD Debashis Chandra Saha in the chair, the function was also addressed, among others, by Sadar UNO Ashraful Momin Khan, and panel mayor of Gaibandha Pourasabha Mostaque Ahmed Ranju while assistant commissioner of DC office M. Sharif Ahmed was the moderator.
Debashis Chandra Saha, in his address of welcome, said the World Habitat Day is observed every year on the first Monday of October throughout the world and it was officially designated by the United Nations and first celebrated in 1986.
The purpose of the day is to reflect the state of our cities and towns and the basic human rights to adequate shelter and to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the habitat of future generations, he also said.
SP M. Ashraful Islam urged all concerned to pay a big attention to the need for better shelter across the country and the world and share the priority of affordable and adequate housing everywhere.
Earlier, a grand rally was brought out from the premises of Independence Sqarue which ended at the same venue after parading the thoroughfares of the town.
A large number of people participated in the rally carrying banners and festoons.
