The rush of passengers, private cars and goods-laden vehicles are increasing at Shimulia ghat from Saturday morning ahead of hard lockdown to contain deadly coronavirus transmission.

In the meantime, a large number of people from Dhaka and South Bengal are running towards the ghat for returning their respective village homes as the government announced a seven-day strict lcokdown across the country from Monday.

The ghat and local sources said a total of 14 ferries are moving on Shimulia-Banglabazar route. The passengers are crossing the ghats ignoring the lockdown and health rules. Ferries are packed with thousands of travelers. Most of them have no face masks.

BIWTC’s Shimulia ghat terminal superintendent Mehedi hasan said 14 ferries are currently operating on the Shimulia-Banglabazar route. As per the lockdown rules, only vehicles carrying patients and emergency vehicles are allowed to cross. But the passengers are gathering at the terminal despite the ban. A long queue of the vehicles are on the ghat.
