Bangladesh will face a very dire situation unless the ongoing coronavirus pandemic comes under control within the next one week, said the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS)’s spokesman Professor Dr Robed Amin today (Sunday).

“It will also throw all of us into a very dangerous situation,” he said in a virtual bulletin organised by the DGHS on Sunday.

Professor Dr Robed Amin said the Delta variant is not only causing death to elderly, but younger people are also dying.

He said division-wise analysis shows that coronavirus has already spread to all districts of the country. Along with it, infection and death are gradually increasing.

Professor Dr Robed Amin said 70 died in Dhaka division during the last 24 hours, 20 in Chattogram, 13 in Rajshahi, and 51 in Khulna. Identification rate in Dhaka 49.87%, 18.29% in Chattogram, and 11.4% in Khulna. Pressure of the patients at hospitals is increasing in Dhaka, Chattogram and Khulna.

He said the rate of infection was much higher in the country last month. In June, 1,12,718 people were infected in the country. During the first 10 days of July, we saw some one lakh people were infected. “The way we are being infected, and the pressuire of patients to the hospitals continues to rise, there will be no empty beds at the hospitals anymore after 7 to 10 days. Many beds were empty in hospitals last month. Even, the ICU beds were vacant. But the number of empty beds is gradually decreasing. At present, only 300 COVID-19 ICU beds are vacant in the country.
