The government has made an arrangement of 21 crore doses of vaccine to check the spread of deadly coronavirus in the country.

Health Minister Zahid Maleque said this while addressing a programme virtually on Saturday. Bangladesh Private Medical College Association (BPMCA) arranged the programme with its president MA Mubin Khan in the chair.

“We have made an arrangement of 21 crore vaccines. These vaccines will come to the country in phases till next year. Now we have 3 crore Chinese vaccines, 7 crore COVAX vaccines, one crore Russian vaccines, 3 crore AstraZeneca vaccines and 7 crore Johnson vaccines. If we get these vaccines then 80 percent of the people can be vaccinated,” said the minister.

He further said, “Besides healthcare, we have to look at vaccines. We get vaccines before the neighboring countries. We signed a contract with Serum Institute of India for 3 crore doses of vaccine. From there we got only 70 lakh doses of vaccine. We received 30 lakh doses of vaccine as gift. All in all, we got 3 crore doses of vaccine. The contract was signed for 3 crore doses of vaccine but still did not get it. We have contacted other sources and we have been successful.”

Zahid Maleque said, “About 90 per cent of the patients who come to the hospital are non-vaccinated. As a result, they have become infected because they have not been vaccinated. Seventy-five percent of the patients admitted to government hospitals are rural and 90 per cent are non-vaccinated and all are elderly.”

If we can seriously vaccinate the elderly in the village, bring them to the vaccination center, then our number of patients and deaths will decrease, he said.
