Two schoolgirls were killed in a road crash at Sadar upazila in Laxmipur district on Saturday morning.
Deceased Sanjida Akter, daughter of Arifur Rahman of Madyha Keroa village under Raipur upazila, was an eighth grader of Laxmipur Government Girls High School while her cousin Fahmida Akter, a tenth grader of Segun Bagicha Girls High School in Dhaka.
Witnesses said Arifur along with Sanjida and Fahmida was going to visit their village home from the district town by a motorcycle.
Suddenly, the both pillion riders fell off the vehicle and soon after, a truck ran over them at Palerhat area at about 10:00am. They both died on the spot.
Angered by the accident, locals blocked the road and staged a demonstration. The blockade was, later, withdrawn following police intervention.
However, locals caught the truck driver and handed him over to Laxmipur Sadar Police Station.
Confirming the matter, the police station sub-inspector Abdul Hannan said the bodies were handed over to the family members without autopsy as per their request.
