Retired DU professor crushed under train in Gazipur

A retired professor of Dhaka University (DU) has been killed when a running train rammed his car at an unmanned level crossing at Kaliganj in Gazipur.

Deceased Abdur Rahim Khan, 72, was a resident of NAM Garden Officers’ Quarters at Mirpur Section-13 in Dhaka.

The accident happened around 6:00pm on Friday when the car, carrying Abdur Rahim Khan, his wife and driver, fell into a roadside ditch after being hit by a Chattogram-bound ‘Subarna Express’ train at Nalchata area.

The impact of the collision was such that Abdur Rahim Khan died on the spot.

His wife and driver Soleman Mia sustained injuries and were rushed to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex. Later, they were shifted to Dhaka for better treatment, said Kaliganj Police Station SI Pradeep Kumar Saha.

The former DU professor and his wife were heading towards Dhaka’s Mirpur through their private car from Tangail district when the accident occurred.

The body was sent to Narsingdi General Hospital morgue for an autopsy, the police officer said.
