Three killed in Habiganj road crash

There people were killed as a truck rammed a battery-run auto-rickshaw at Madhabpur upazila in Habiganj district on Saturday.

They were identified as Mofizul Mia, 28, an inhabitant of village Barachandura; Ansu Mia, 28, of village Muradpur; and autorickshaw driver Md Samad Mia, 30, of village Purba Madhabpur in the upazila.

Locals said the truck rammed the auto-rickshaw near Jalabad Gas Field area on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway at about 7:00am, leaving Mofizul dead on the spot and Samad and Ansu severely injured.

Police said some muggers were fleeing with a truck towards Sylhet after hijacking it from Tangail on Saturday morning. When the truck reached at Fire Service Station area under Madhabpur upazila, an autorickshaw coming from the opposite direction was rammed by the speeding truck, leaving the driver dead on the spot.

Two passengers who were seriously injured in the accident were sent to Osmani Medical College Hospital in Sylhet where they succumbed later on.

The duo succumbed to their injuries on the way to the hospital, said Shayestaganj Highway Police Station officer in-charge Mainul Islam.

Mainul Islam said the accident happened when a group of muggers were trying to flee away with a truck after mugging it from Tangail. Though the truck was seized, the driver fled away.
