Homeopathy, Unani degree holders can’t use ‘Dr’ title: HC

Homeopathy and Unani degree holders will not be permitted to use ‘Doctor’ title before their names, the High Court has published a full verdict saying this.

The court, at the same time, advised to form separate Ministry with this type of alternative medical treatments.

An HC bench of Justice Md Ashraful Kamal and Justice Rajiq Al Jalil published the 71-page verdict on Saturday.

The verdict says that only MBBS or BDS degree holders from medical/dental colleges under the BMDC can use ‘Dr’ title, according to Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council Act, 2010.

Bangladesh Homeopathy Board published a notice on February 6, 2020, where it permitted physicians to use ‘Dr’ title before their names. But it was totally illegal.

Earlier, a writ was filed seeking directive of using ‘Dr’ title before the Homeopathy and Unani degree holders. After hearing on the writ the Hig Court issued a rule.

Barrister Rashna Imam and Advocate Khandker Nilima Yasmin stood for the writ petitioner.
