A court in Dhaka on Sunday granted permanent bail to former director-general of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Abul Kalam Azad in a corruption case.
After hearing the bail petition filed by Azad’s lawyer, Dhaka Senior Special Judge’s Court Judge KM Imrul Kayes passed the order.
Zulfiqar Ali, an official of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), confirmed this.
On September 29, last year, the case investigation officer Md Farid Ahmed Patwary, deputy director of ACC submitted the chargesheet in the case against Azad and five others.
Five other accused are Regent Hospital chairman Shahed Karim, former director (Hospitals and Clinics) Dr Aminul Hasan; Deputy Director (Hospital-1) Dr Md Younus Ali; Assistant Director (Hospital-1) Dr Md Shafiur Rahman and Research Officer Dr Md Didarul Islam.
Farid Ahmed Patwary filed the case accusing that the accused embezzled government funds in the name of coronavirus sample collection and treatment of patients.
The accused transformed Regent Hospital into a dedicated COVID-19 hospital without renewing its license and abused their power as they wanted to be benefited by illegal means, according to the case statement.
