A female student of North South University (NSU) was killed in a road accident at Kuril Biswa Road Flyover in the capital on Friday morning.

Maisha Mumtaz Meem, a student of the 6th semester of the Department of English at the NSU, was killed in the accident at about 7:30am on Friday. It was learnt that she was driving a scooty.

The 20-year old Meem came out of their Uttara Sector 6 residence on Friday morning with her scooty to attend her university class. On her way to North South University, he was critically injured in a road accident on Kuril Biswa Road flyover at about 7:30am.

Khilkhet Police Station sources said a pedestrian first saw injured Mim was lying on the road at about 7:30am. She was later rushed to Kurmitola General Hospital where an on-duty doctor declared her dead.

The body was sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital morgue.

It was known that Meem was driving her scooty. Police assumed that the covered van might have hit her scooty while she was driving it.

It is being assumed that she was killed being crashed by a covered van. Police have already collected the vehicle number of the covered van examining the nearby CCTV footage.

Family sources said Meem’s younger sister Mou had medical college admission test (2021-22 academic year) on Friday morning. So, Mou’s mother took Mou to the examination centre early in the morning. However, both the mother and younger sister were not told about Meem’s death until Friday afternoon.

On the other hand, Meem body was handed over to her family at about 4:00pm after postmortem at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital. Relatives had already left Meem’s village home at Mouchak in Gazipur with her body for burial. Meem’s mother and younger sister also left for Gazipur.

It is learnt that Meem was meritorous between two sisters. Her dream was to work a reputed organisation obtaining higher degree in English from a renowned university. Accordingly, Meem got admitted to the Department of English at North South University securing GPA 5 in both SSC and HSC from Mouchak Ideal School and College established by her father. She had been travelling to her university over the last three years by driving her scooty.

Covered van identified

Khilkhet Police Station’s OC Munshi Sabbir Ahmed said the accident happened when the girl was going down to 300 feet road from the flyover. Though there were no marks of injury on anywhere of the victim’s body, there were marks of injuries on her head. A covered van was detected in CCTV footage. Work is going on with the footage. The covered van’s number was also found, but “we don’t want to divulge the number right now for the sake of investigation.”
