Former superintendent of police Babul Akhter paid Tk 3 lakh to the accused to kill his wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu. This information came up in the statements of two witnesses given before the court and the investigation of Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI).
Apart from this, the matter of transaction for the killing is also mentioned in the final report given by the PBI and in the newly filed case.
Santosh Kumar Chakma, investigating officer of the case, said, “Three days after his wif’s murder, Babul Akhter told his business partner Saiful Haque that he should be paid Tk 3 lakh from his share of the profits. Saiful sent the money to Gazi Al Mamun through bKash. Mamun distributed the money to the accused including Musa and Wasim. However, it could not be confirmed how much money was given to whom.”
The PBI investigation officer further said, “Babul Akhter’s source Ehteshamul Haque Bhola and Kamrul Sikder alias Musa were seen in the video footage of Mitu’s murder. But after the incident, he (Babul) claimed that the militants were involved. Even though he knew his source, he suppressed the matter.”
“He never said that he paid Tk 3 lakh to the accused including Musa and Wasim who took part in the murder through Saiful Haque.”
Meanwhile, Babul’s business partners Saiful and Mamun testified as witnesses before the court of Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate Shafiuddin on Tuesday. There, they both mentioned the payment of money to those involved in the murder of his wife at the behest of Babul.
Mahmuda Khanam Mitu’s father Mosharraf Hossain on Wednesday told reporters that “An NGO worker had an extramarital affair with Babul Akhter. As the matter became known, Babul had a quarrel with his wife.”
“Mitu informed us about the matter before his death. We have also tried to resolve the issue but did not succeed. At one stage Babul and the woman threatened to kill Mitu,” he added.
On June 5, 2016, unidentified assailants gunned down Babul’s wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu at the port city’s GEC intersection while she was going to drop her son Mahir Akhter, 7, for a bus of Chittagong Cantonment Public School and College.
Soon after the crime, Babul had filed a murder case at Panchlaish Police Station against three unidentified men.
